This week after taking to the technicians I made prototype No.8. Thought through the process I've been done. Talked to a musician Paul Wright and got many valuable suggestions. I had a quick test with my friend Ching and Ian and got some helpful feedbacks.

  • Prototype eight

After tested out the last prototype I tried to fix the problems I found with it. Again it's getting more and more complex. I tried to preserve the structure as two separate parts. To me, it represents a more flexible application. But to achieve this, I need to make a force balance the force of the strings which is much stronger than I thought. As my sketches getting more and more complicated and the approaching due day, I found the most doable way is to give up this separate structure. An amusing thing is from all the new sketches most of them lead me to a shape similar to the initial prototype I made to explain my final concept from last semester.

After all the way around I came back to where I started.

I made an MDF prototype and tested it out. I tuned it to stander tone of soprano ukulele; it sounds much better than previous prototypes. Good to know it sounds much better than previous prototypes because it covered the surface make the resonance inside the tin.

  • Sound experiment 2

Another thing that makes me feel better to give up separate structure is another sound test I made. It turns out the gain of sound can make up the loss of flexibility.

  • Review by Paul Wright

I asked Paul to be my expert reviewer. He is an experienced musician and composer. I took my prototypes to him. He gave me some valuable advice on the sounds.

  • Feedback from Ching and Ian

I let my friend Ching and Ian try my prototype and observed how they used it and got plenty of comments.

Ching is using the prototype

Still I'm so easy to trap myself in details want everything perfect and forgot the time. Just by the end of this week, I unwillingly decided to give up the thought of making a moveable neck or a double slidable neck and it's only three weeks to my due day.
